In a sensational development, police in Assam have arrested six BJP workers in connection with the discovery of an ISIS flag in the state’s Nalbari district.

Police have picked up six BJP activists for questioning over the recovery of an alleged ISIS flag at Belsor in Lower Assam’s Nalbari district.

Acting on a tip off, Belsor police on Monday night apprehended six BJP members—Tapan Barman from Kaihati, Mojamil Ali from Chamata, Moon Ali from Baruakur, Pulak Barman from Belsor, Dwipjyoti Thakuria, Sorojjyoti Baishya and Khelua Patowary from Piplibari—for their alleged role in the incident.

A mysterious alleged ISIS flag with a written message ‘Join ISIS’ was found tied to a tree in lower at Kaihati under Belsor police station in the district.

The flag was noticed by locals on a tree in paddy field and they immediately informed Belsor police. Police removed the flag and launched an investigation into the incident. Sources said the flag was black in colour with ‘Join ISIS’ written in white along with some words in Arabic.

Earlier, on May 2, similar six IS NE flags were recovered in Goalpara district on a river bank near Goalpara town. Police there probing into the issue stated that the flags may have been put up by miscreants to create tension among the people of the area.

The flags were found days ahead of the visit of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, to the state.

The JPC headed by BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal, has come to the state on Sunday to incorporate the opinions of organisations and individuals into the bill. The JPC on Monday conducted its hearing on the bill where several organisations submitted their memoranda against the bill.

An activist claimed that to divert the attention of the people from JPC hearing the ISIS flag incident was orchestrated by the members of the state’s ruling party, which is supporting the Bill.—nenow.in
