Mumbai: Consumers Accuse Adani Company of Inflating Electricity Tariffs by 40–50 Per Cent
Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said that “Modi-led BJP government has created an environment where private firms are looting the common people”.

Consumers in Mumbai allege that there has been a 40–50 per cent increase in their electricity tariffs since Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd. (AEML) took over the facilitation of electricity supply in the city from the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Infrastructure, in August 2018.
A Jogeshwari resident toldTOI that her bill went up by 90 per cent, “I get a monthly bill of around Rs 1,700 and in some months, it escalate to Rs 2,500. But the recent bill was Rs 3,230.”
Sanjay Nirupam, the Mumbai Congress president alleged that AEML was “looting” the consumers of the city. He questioned the working of the acquisition deal between AEML and Reliance Infrastructure, calling attention to Reliance Infrastructure’s claim that after selling its Mumbai’s power distribution to AEML, it had reduced its debts by around Rs 13,800 crores.
Nirupam told Mumbai Live, “In August this year, Reliance Infrastructure signed Rs 18,800–crore deal for sale of its Mumbai (distribution business) to Adani Transmission in order to pare its debts. The rest of the burden falls on the shoulders of the consumers. Why should we Mumbaikars always pay so that the PM and his favourite businessmen can continue to loot us?”
Nirupam reportedly produced electricity bills — one from when Reliance Power’s was supplying power and another from post-Adani takeover. He pointed out that compared to Rs 55 per month earlier, the fixed charge had been increased to Rs 60 per month for the tariff category of 0-100.
My electricity consumption has been flat for years but my bills have jumped from around Rs 900 a month to Rs 1500 every since @Adani_Elec_Mum took over from Reliance. Shocked.
He toldIndia Today, “Instead of encouraging privatisation in an honest way, the Modi-led BJP government has created an environment where private firms are looting the common people. Initially, Anil Ambani looted the people and now Adani is doing the same. Aren’t Gautam Adani and Anil Ambani close friends with PM Modi?”
Reportedly, AEML has contradicted these allegations. It said that there since September 1, 2018 there has been a nominal increase of 0.2 per cent since the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC)—the authority which determines tariffs—had revised its tariffs, the consumers were being forced to pay slightly more for their electricity consumption.
On November 16, AEML had tweeted, “Rumours are many but the truth is one. Adani Electricity believes in being ethical and transparent at all times. In case of any further queries or doubts, please reach out to us through our customer care. #PowerOfService”
