The Congress on Thursday confirmed that there had been no talks with Aam Aadmi Party for an electoral alliance in this year’s Lok Sabha polls. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, PC Chacko, AICC in-charge of Delhi, said that his party was ‘fully prepared’ to face the Lok Sabha polls on its own in Delhi.
While announcing Sheila Dikshit’s name as the new president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, Chacko said, “This (press conference} is only about the appointments of President and Working Presidents. I do not want to go into any other issues. But since the question has been put to me, there is no question of any discussions till now about an alliance of Congress with any other parties. The Congress in Delhi is strong enough to fight on its own. We are fully prepared and ready to face the 2019 elections on its own.”
Chacko’s comments effectively ended the speculation on the talks of a possible alliance between the Congress and the AAP in Delhi for the Lok Sabha elections.
Chacko was also asked about the coordination among Congress leaders in light of Ajak Maken’s tweet confirming Dikshit’s appointment even before the official press conference, scheduled for this purpose. He said, “This shows that we have a great coordination in the party. Ajay Maken knew about this announcement, so he tweeted. We are happy about this.”
On Sunday, while addressing a rally in Kakrola, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had urged voters to not vote for the Congress. He had told the gathering to not waste their votes by voting in favour of the Congress.--JKR
